Open Our Eyes is where Earth, Wind & Fire found their footing as a crossover force, pressed here on 140-gram vinyl.

Released in 1974 as the band's fifth studio album, it was recorded at Caribou Ranch in the Colorado mountains, with Maurice White producing alongside Joe Wissert and arranger Charles Stepney as associate producer. Stepney's jazz-trained ear for horns and harmony helped shape the classic EWF sound, and the album went on to top the soul chart, opening the door to the even bigger records that followed.

Mighty Mighty kicks things off with a tight, strutting funk groove and an uplifting message, and Devotion is pure spiritual soul, lifted by soaring falsetto harmonies. Kalimba Story puts Maurice White's thumb piano right at the centre, a nod to his love of African sounds, while the title track closes the record on a gospel-flavoured, hopeful note. In between, the band stretches out into jazz-funk territory, with percussion and horn lines that never sit still for long.

It is the sound of a band about to become giants, and the record that hints most clearly at the horn-driven grandeur of That's the Way of the World. Fans of the hits will hear the exact moment the formula clicked, with all the warmth and adventure still intact.
