Soft-focus and sun-warmed, Flowers finds Durand Jones & The Indications leaning into the sweeter side of soul on their 2025 album, and the result is their most tender record yet.
The Bloomington, Indiana band's story began in a basement, and a decade on, this fourth album feels like a return to those roots with far more confidence. Singer Durand Jones, singer and drummer Aaron Frazer and guitarist Blake Rhein wrote much of it together at Rhein's Chicago studio, then produced it themselves, building many tracks from one-take demos to keep the first spark intact.
The two lead voices remain the band's magic trick, Jones bringing warmth and grit while Frazer's falsetto floats over the top. Lead single "Been So Long" and "Flower Moon" show off the softer focus, with touches of disco glinting at the edges. "Paradise" is the loveliest thing here, carrying echoes of Sade, Stevie Wonder and Minnie Riperton in its lush, late-night glow.
Funk and Southern soul still run underneath, keeping all that sweetness grounded and giving the rhythm section plenty to chew on.
It plays like a band settled into the house they spent ten years building, and it makes a perfect companion for slow mornings and late nights alike.
