Glamour, yachts and a Patrick Nagel smile: Rio is the 1982 record that turned Duran Duran from Birmingham hopefuls into global pin-ups, presented here as a remastered LP.

The band's second album arrived just as music television was rewriting the rules of pop, and Duran Duran were ready with sharp suits, exotic videos and songs strong enough to back up the image. Working with producer Colin Thurston, they fused new wave synths, funk-inflected bass and arena-sized hooks into something that sounded expensive and fun in equal measure.

The title track still bursts out of the speakers with John Taylor's racing bassline and Simon Le Bon chasing the melody across the beach. Hungry Like the Wolf prowls on a jittery synth riff and a chorus built for shouting, while Save a Prayer slows everything down into a shimmering, bittersweet ballad that remains one of the band's most loved moments. Closing track The Chauffeur offers something darker, a moody, atmospheric piece that hints at the art-school ambition beneath all that gloss.

Rio is where Duran Duran's style and substance met at full volume, a defining record of its decade that still sounds like a sunset party nobody wants to leave. Drop the needle on side one and the eighties come rushing back in glorious technicolour.
