Few debuts arrive as fully formed as Duffy's Rockferry, the 2008 album that made a young singer from North Wales sound like a lost star of sixties soul. It returns on a single LP in 2026.

Rockferry became the UK's best-selling album of its year, won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album and took Best British Album at the Brit Awards. It was a long time coming, pieced together over several years in small, inexpensive studios, which may help explain the handmade warmth that runs through it.

The title track opens the record with a slow, cinematic sweep of strings and longing, setting the tone for everything that follows. Warwick Avenue, named after a London Underground station, turns a breakup into something dignified and quietly devastating. Then comes Mercy, co-written with Steve Booker, with its stomping beat and raw, gritty vocal; it spent five weeks at number one in the UK. Stepping Stone slows things right down, a torch song built on restraint rather than volume.

What ties it all together is Duffy's voice, husky and unguarded, carrying old-school arrangements without ever tipping into pastiche.

Nearly two decades later, Rockferry still sounds like it could belong to almost any era, which is precisely why it has lasted so well.
