Baltimore's finest hit their stride on Enter the Dru, the 1998 second album that made Dru Hill one of the biggest vocal groups of the decade, now on double vinyl.
Sisqó, Jazz, Nokio and Woody had already broken through with their debut, but this is where the quartet's lush, tightly stacked harmonies and street-savvy swagger reached full power. The record moves easily between sultry slow jams and harder, hip-hop-leaning cuts, with Method Man dropping by on "This Is What We Do," and it gave Sisqó the launchpad that would soon make him a solo star in his own right.
"How Deep Is Your Love" was the smash, a tough, urgent groove that showed off their range, while "These Are the Times" slowed things down into one of their most beloved ballads. "Beauty" brings the late-night sensuality the group did so well, and across the whole record those four voices wrap around each other until you can barely tell where one ends and the next begins.
Few R&B albums of the late nineties balance heat and heart this well. Spread over two LPs, it shows just how much those voices could do together, and why so many groups that followed borrowed from their playbook.
