Before the bagpipes filled stadiums, Dropkick Murphys were a scrappy Boston street-punk band cutting singles for the faithful, and The Singles Collection, Vol. 1 gathers those early sparks.

Released in 2000, this compilation rounds up the band's earliest seven-inch singles and split releases, with original singer Mike McColgan leading the charge alongside bassist Ken Casey, guitarist Rick Barton and drummer Jeff Erna. It also adds a raucous live set recorded at the party celebrating the release of their debut album, Do or Die, a snapshot of the hometown crowd at full volume.

Barroom Hero opens with a gruff, anthemic singalong about a life lived hard, while John Law and Never Alone show the band's early knack for terrace-ready choruses. Their take on The Clash's Guns of Brixton pays tribute to an obvious influence, and the covers scattered through the set make their punk family tree plain to see.

Raw production and gang vocals give everything a basement-show urgency, the sound of a young band playing every song as if it might be their last.

For fans who know the band from their later anthems, this is a vital look at where it all began, rough edges intact and spilled beer practically audible.
