The Meanest of Times spreads Dropkick Murphys' 2007 album across two LPs, fifteen songs of Boston grit, bagpipes and stubborn loyalty.

It was the band's first release on their own Born & Bred label after years with Hellcat, and the last to feature guitarist Marc Orrell. Running the show themselves, they made one of their most focused records, blending Celtic folk with hard-charging street punk and writing about family, faith and the neighbourhoods that shaped them, all without losing the rowdy sense of fun that fills their shows.

"Famous for Nothing" kicks things off with gang vocals and a sprint-pace chorus, while "The State of Massachusetts" pairs banjo and accordion with a story of a family torn apart by addiction. The traditional "Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya" gets a rowdy, pint-raising makeover, and "Never Forget" closes the album on a defiant note. Ken Casey and Al Barr trade lead vocals like old sparring partners, pushing each other harder with every verse while the pipes swirl around them.

Nearly two decades later, it still stands among the band's strongest albums, a record that balances heartache and celebration with real conviction. The double-vinyl layout gives every chorus room to breathe and every bagpipe line space to soar.
