Going Out in Style is Dropkick Murphys at their most theatrical, a 2011 concept album presented here as a double LP.

The band's seventh studio album tells the story of Cornelius Larkin, a fictional Irish immigrant whose life and lineage unfold after the opening scene of his own wake. Working again with producer Ted Hutt, the Boston crew wove family history, labour pride and pub-room humour into one of their most ambitious records.

The title track is a riotous send-off featuring Fat Mike of NOFX, The Living End's Chris Cheney and comedian Lenny Clarke, while "The Hardest Mile" honours the Irish railroad workers lost at Duffy's Cut in 1832. "Take 'Em Down" adds a pro-union rallying cry, dedicated to union workers in Wisconsin, that hits like a picket line chant.

The biggest surprise arrives late, when Bruce Springsteen joins the band for a rollicking take on the old standard "Peg O' My Heart". Bagpipes and accordion swirl around the gang vocals throughout, and the Parkington Sisters add strings and backing vocals that lend the quieter moments real tenderness.

Over four sides, it plays like a raucous Irish wake set to Celtic punk, and the story still hangs together beautifully from the first toast to the final singalong.
