Drive-By Truckers’ The Fine Print is the sound of a great band digging through the attic and discovering the walls are packed with dynamite. Originally released in 2009, this sprawling collection gathers unreleased material from the Decoration Day and The Dirty South era - arguably the group’s most creatively combustible stretch.
Produced by David Barbe, the album captures Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley, Jason Isbell, and company operating with loose confidence and Southern-rock grit to spare. Rather than sounding like leftovers, these recordings feel alive, rowdy, and occasionally rough around the edges in exactly the right way. It is the kind of compilation that deepens the mythology instead of simply padding the catalog.
Highlights include the snarling alternate take of “Goode’s Field Road,” the bittersweet storytelling of “Uncle Frank,” and a ragged, heartfelt run through Tom Petty’s “Rebels.” Their rotating-vocal version of Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone” is pure Truckers magic - unpolished, communal, and loaded with barroom soul. Jason Isbell’s presence throughout also adds extra weight, capturing a pivotal chapter in the band’s evolution before the lineup shifted again.
This 2LP reissue arrives pressed on Crystal Blue Curaçao vinyl and features Wes Freed’s unmistakable artwork and poster designs. For longtime fans, The Fine Print is not just a companion piece - it is a vivid snapshot of a band overflowing with stories, swagger, and beautifully scruffy brilliance.
