The Definitive Decoration Day [4LP Box Set] Vinyl
The Definitive Decoration Day reassembles the record that made Drive-By Truckers a genuine band rather than just Patterson Hood's project, remixed by original producer David Barbe and cut at Abbey Road across a 4LP box.
Decoration Day arrived in 2003 as the first album to feature Jason Isbell, and the difference is audible from the opening track, a third songwriting voice suddenly balancing Hood and Mike Cooley's, all three trading verses about the same wrecked Southern families and doomed men from different angles. Pitchfork called it one of the more ambitious records of the era's early years, and it holds up as the moment the band's three-guitar, three-songwriter arrangement stopped being a gimmick and became the whole point. This box adds an unreleased 2002 live set from Athens' Flicker Bar and a 40-page book with a new essay from biographer Stephen Deusner.
Outfit is still Isbell's calling card, a father's list of hard-won advice delivered with more tenderness than the band usually allows itself. Sinkhole rides Cooley's dry wit over a story of rural desperation pushed to its logical extreme, and Heathens carries the record's darkest family history, murder passed down like an inheritance.
Fifteen tracks, remastered and finally given the treatment this record always deserved.
