Drive-By Truckers' The Complete Dirty South rebuilds their 2004 Southern epic the way the band first imagined it, laid out across two LPs.
The Dirty South was the Alabama-rooted group's fifth album and their second concept record after Southern Rock Opera, a hard look at the myths and contradictions of the region they call home. Cut at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, it caught the three-songwriter lineup of Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley and Jason Isbell at full strength, and for years it stood as the band's best-selling record. First issued in this expanded form in 2023, the new edition restores Goode's Field Road, TVA and The Great Car Dealer War, songs left off the original album, and adds fresh vocal takes on two key tracks.
Where the Devil Don't Stay kicks things off with a story inspired by a poem from Cooley's uncle. Puttin' People on the Moon, now with a new vocal, tells of a town downriver from Huntsville left behind by the space race. Isbell's Danko/Manuel turns the fates of two members of the Band into a meditation on a musician's life.
Every character feels lived in, every guitar part earned.
For fans who know the original by heart, this fuller picture makes the case that The Dirty South was always meant to be bigger.
