Drive-By Truckers' American Band returns as a limited Deluxe Edition on silver vinyl, pairing the 2016 album with a bonus LP of live recordings.
The band's eleventh studio album was produced by longtime collaborator David Barbe and stands as the most openly political record of their career. Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley split the songwriting, and critics greeted the results with rapturous reviews. This edition, issued in 2024, adds updated liner notes from Hood, archival artwork from Wes Freed, whose paintings graced so many of their earlier sleeves, and a second disc recorded live at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia, in 2018.
Ramon Casiano opens the album by digging up the little-known story of a future gun-lobby leader who shot and killed a teenage boy in 1931. Hood's What It Means wrestles with the killings of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown in plain, unflinching language, and Surrender Under Protest examines generations of racial injustice. Once They Banned Imagine takes aim at the impulse to censor art in times of crisis.
The live versions show how hard these songs hit in front of the band's home crowd.
Years on, the questions American Band asks feel no less urgent, and this set gives a landmark record the expanded treatment it deserves.
