Dream Theater's Octavarium gets a clear double vinyl pressing, a fitting showcase for the progressive metal giants at their most ambitious and melodic.

Released in 2005 as the band's eighth studio album, it was also their last for Atlantic, and it is built around the number eight in ways that reward the obsessive listener. Produced by guitarist John Petrucci and drummer Mike Portnoy, the record balances the technical fireworks fans expect with some of the most direct, song-focused writing of their career.

The Root of All Evil opens with a grinding, heavy riff and continues Portnoy's long-running Twelve-step Suite, while These Walls shows off James LaBrie's knack for big, arena-sized choruses. Sacrificed Sons takes on the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks with real gravity, moving from sombre reflection into a furious instrumental storm.

Then comes the title track, a 24-minute epic that stitches together pastoral calm, tightly wound instrumental passages and a soaring, cathartic finale. Given a side of vinyl all to itself, it finally has the room to unfold at its own pace, while Jordan Rudess's keyboards and John Myung's nimble bass lines keep every section moving.

For prog devotees, Octavarium is one of the band's great statements, and this transparent pressing lets those intricate arrangements breathe across four generous sides.
