Dream Theater regrouped and came back swinging on A Dramatic Turn of Events, the 2011 album presented here as a limited 2LP set on clear vinyl.
The record arrived after drummer Mike Portnoy's departure, a moment plenty of fans feared could finish the band. Guitarist John Petrucci took the production chair, new drummer Mike Mangini stepped behind the kit, and the group proved its chemistry ran deeper than any single member. It was their eleventh studio album and one of their most melodic.
Opener "On the Backs of Angels" sets the stage with a ringing, atmospheric intro and a chorus built to soar. "Bridges in the Sky" grows from an eerie opening into crushing riffs, while "Breaking All Illusions" stretches past twelve minutes of shifting moods and dazzling interplay between Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess.
Quieter moments matter too. The piano-led "Far From Heaven" and the gentle closer give James LaBrie room to sing with real tenderness, balancing the progressive metal fireworks, and John Myung's bass keeps everything anchored through the knottiest passages.
For a band facing its biggest crossroads, this was an emphatic answer, full of ambition and surprisingly warm. On clear vinyl across two discs, it makes a handsome addition to any prog collection and a reminder of how strongly they responded to change.
