Galway songwriter Dove Ellis arrived fully formed on Blizzard, a 2025 debut album that marked him out as one of the most striking new voices in Irish folk.
Born Thomas O'Donoghue in Moycullen, County Galway, Ellis first surfaced with a self-released EP before signing with Black Butter and AMF for this full-length. Word travelled fast. He opened for Geese on their Getting Killed tour, recorded a session for Other Voices, and saw Blizzard shortlisted for the Mercury Prize alongside some of the biggest names in British and Irish music, an extraordinary run for a songwriter still in his early twenties.
The songs are indie folk at heart, but rarely predictable, built on careful words and a voice that seems in no hurry to impress. "To the Sandals," the single that introduced him, and the paired singles "Pale Song" and "Love Is" set the stage, while "Heaven Has No Wings" earned a nomination for Best Original Folk Track at the RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards.
It is the sort of debut that announces a writer with his own way of seeing things, and the patience to let listeners come to him.
For anyone following the new wave of Irish songwriting, this is a debut worth living with, and one that rewards close, unhurried listening.
