Spread across two pink LPs, Rose Pink Cadillac is Dope Lemon at their most laid-back and loved-up, the sun-drenched alter ego of Australian songwriter Angus Stone.
Best known as one half of Angus & Julia Stone, Stone uses Dope Lemon as an outlet for slow-burning, psychedelic grooves, and this third album under the name arrived in 2022. He has described it as a love album, and as a record of two halves, with a daytime first half that gives way to a darker, after-hours second act full of shadows and slow-motion romance.
The daytime stretch is pure warmth. The title track "Rose Pink Cadillac" cruises along on a lazy, sun-baked groove, "Kids Fallin' in Love" is woozy and sweet, and "Howl With Me" leans into the album's loose, late-afternoon swagger. "Stingray Pete" keeps the wheels turning with a laconic charm all its own, before guest turns from Winston Surfshirt and Louise Verneuil add fresh colour and a little extra soul as the sun goes down.
Spaced-out vocals, lo-fi textures and mellow, soulful rhythms run through every song, perfect for long drives, backyard sunsets and longer evenings.
For anyone who likes their rock slow, smoky and in no particular hurry, this double LP is a cruise well worth taking.
