Nameless is the debut album from Montreal singer Dominique Fils-Aimé, a hushed, hypnotic tribute to the roots of the blues, here on 180-gram vinyl.
Released in 2018, it was the first chapter of a trilogy tracing the history of African-American music, later followed by albums devoted to jazz and to soul. Fils-Aimé, born in Montreal to Haitian parents, approaches that history with remarkable restraint. Before this debut, she reached the semi-finals of La Voix, Quebec's version of The Voice, then chose a far quieter path. Rather than reaching for big, belted showstoppers, she builds songs from layered vocal harmonies and spare, patient arrangements, letting silence carry as much weight as sound. The effect is closer to a whispered conversation than a performance.
Strange Fruit opens the record with chilling stillness, honouring the song's painful history without imitating anyone who sang it before. Birds and Home show her gift for turning a simple refrain into something close to a spell, while the closing Feeling Good finds fresh depth in a standard most listeners think they already know by heart.
Political, intimate and beautifully understated, Nameless rewards close, quiet listening. It's the sort of record that makes a room go still, and a striking introduction to one of Canada's most distinctive voices in jazz and blues.
