Dolly Parton strips everything back to voice, guitar and heart on Pure & Simple, returning a decade on as a 10th anniversary pressing on Watercolor Dream colored vinyl.

The album grew out of a run of intimate 2015 concerts at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium and at Dollywood, where Parton found that small rooms and spare arrangements suited her songs best. Released in 2016 and produced by Dolly herself, it carried that feeling into the studio and then onto the road with the Pure & Simple Tour.

Love is the subject almost everywhere. The title track skips along on a light, sunny melody and a simple promise of devotion, while "Outside Your Door" trades sweetness for longing. "Head Over High Heels" kicks up its heels with playful bounce, and "Tomorrow Is Forever" revisits a song she first cut as a duet with Porter Wagoner, now sung alone with a quiet, steady glow.

There is no gloss to hide behind here, only acoustic guitars, gentle harmonies and that unmistakable voice, still crystal clear and full of mischief. It is the sound of a legend who knows exactly what she does best and sees no reason to overcomplicate it.

Ten years on, this anniversary edition gives one of Parton's most heartfelt modern albums a fresh splash of color for the shelf.
