Any Port in a Storm is the sun-baked 2008 debut from Huntington Beach's Dirty Heads, spread across two black LPs in a gatefold jacket.

The album had a rocky road to release. It was first lined up for a major label, but when that deal fell apart the band kept their master recordings and put the record out on their own terms through Executive Music Group. That independence suited a group whose blend of reggae, hip hop and acoustic rock never fit neatly into a single box, and the album steadily built them a devoted following.

Stan Frazier and Steve Fox produced, with Mario Caldato Jr. handling the mix, and the sessions drew some serious company, including Billy Preston on organ in one of his final recordings and Josh Freese on drums. Stand Tall and Check the Level, both singles, set laid-back reggae grooves against quick-fire verses and easy, sing-along hooks, while Believe and Shine keep the mood bright and breezy. The bass sits warm and high in the mix, exactly where a beach record wants it.

It is the sound of a band finding its voice with a grin on its face. Spread across two discs, every groove gets room to breathe on a long summer evening.
