Lock Up the Wolves finds Ronnie James Dio rebuilding his band from the ground up, and this red vinyl pressing brings his 1990 album back with a suitably fiery look.

Dio was the only member left from Dream Evil, so he assembled a new lineup featuring an 18-year-old Rowan Robertson on guitar, Jens Johansson on keyboards, Teddy Cook on bass and former AC/DC drummer Simon Wright. He produced the record with Tony Platt, and the result is darker and more brooding than the glossy fantasy metal of his mid-eighties work.

"Wild One" kicks things off with a speedy, snarling riff, while "Hey Angel" chases a brighter, more melodic hook. The title track is the true showpiece, a slow, menacing epic that lets Dio's voice prowl through the gloom, and "Night Music" adds a moody, atmospheric streak to the middle of the record.

Robertson's playing is raw and adventurous, giving the songs a hungry edge that suits Dio's commanding delivery, and Johansson's keyboards add color and atmosphere without ever softening the punch of the rhythm section.

Often overlooked in the Dio catalog, it is a record that rewards a fresh listen with the volume up, and the red wax makes it an eye-catching addition for metal collectors.
