Live in Fresno 1983 catches Ronnie James Dio's new band on the Holy Diver tour, with that mighty voice at the peak of its powers.
Holy Diver had just announced Dio as a solo force after his years fronting Rainbow and Black Sabbath, and the tour that followed proved he could fill arenas under his own name. This set was recorded at Selland Arena in Fresno, with Vivian Campbell on guitar, Jimmy Bain on bass and Vinny Appice on drums.
Stand Up and Shout kicks things off at full throttle, and Holy Diver lands with all its galloping menace, Campbell's guitar slashing through the mix. Dio also reaches back into his own history: Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell stretches out into an epic centrepiece, and Rainbow's Man on the Silver Mountain gets a rousing, crowd-pleasing outing.
Through it all, that soaring, operatic voice sounds untouchable, and the band plays with the hunger of a group with everything still to prove. It's a vivid document of a new outfit in its first flush, loud and completely fearless.
For metal fans, this is a front-row seat at one of the genre's great live acts, caught right at the start of its long reign.
