Dinosaur Jr. crank the amps back up on There Near, their 2026 album, pressed here on clear pink vinyl that looks far sweeter than the racket in the grooves.

It is the sixth studio album since J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph reunited, and it arrives five years after Sweep It Into Space. The trio recorded in short bursts over roughly a year at Bisquiteen Studio in Amherst, playing almost everything themselves, with Ken Mauri adding piano and organ. Mascis even picked up a 1970s Mesa Boogie amp to chase the tone of their debut.

"Several Got Away" leads the charge with Mascis' unmistakable fuzz and laconic drawl, all bent notes and sky-high solos. Barlow contributes two songs, "Blowin' Up" and "No One's Ready," and both take sharp aim at the state of the world with his trademark mix of melody and bite.

"Put It Down" begins as a ballad before collapsing into a wall of heavy guitar, a neat summary of how this band has always let tenderness and noise share the same room. Murph's drumming keeps everything loose and swinging, never too tidy.

Four decades in, Dinosaur Jr. still sound like three people having the time of their lives at unsafe volume, and this record is loud, warm and proudly unpolished.
