Eight years after Eonian, Dimmu Borgir return with Grand Serpent Rising, their tenth studio album, pressed here as a green double LP in a gatefold jacket.
The Norwegian symphonic black metal veterans have never been in a hurry, and this record arrived after a long, patient build. Shagrath and Silenoz wrote the material, guitarist Galder departed in 2024 along the way, and the band produced the album themselves, with Fredrik Nordström recording, mixing and mastering at Studio Fredman. The result is a 2026 album that runs close to seventy minutes and wears its scale proudly.
It also marks a homecoming of sorts, since several songs are sung in Norwegian for the first time since Stormblåst MMV. Lead single "Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel" makes the most of it, with Enya Thoresen adding clean vocals against the band's orchestral storm. "Ascent" leans into widescreen menace, choral grandeur stacked on cold, driving riffs, while "As Seen in the Unseen" stretches out to nearly seven minutes of slow-burning drama.
Closing instrumental "Gjǫll" lets the album exhale before the needle lifts, a fitting last word after so much bombast. For fans who waited out the long silence, this green pressing gives the record the gatefold presentation its ambition deserves. It sounds like a band that took its time on purpose.
