Dimmu Borgir's Abrahadabra returns as a limited 2LP reissue on colored splatter vinyl in a gatefold jacket, a suitably grand package for the Norwegian band's most orchestral album.
Released in 2010, their eighth studio album saw the band pared back to its core trio of Shagrath, Silenoz and Galder, and they answered the upheaval by thinking bigger than ever. The Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the Schola Cantorum choir joined the sessions, with Gaute Storaas arranging parts for more than a hundred musicians and singers, and the band produced it themselves before Andy Sneap mixed it into a towering wall of sound.
Instrumental overture "Xibir" raises the curtain, and "Born Treacherous" plunges straight into the storm. "Gateways" is the wild card, with Agnete Kjølsrud's unhinged guest vocals cutting through the choir, while the self-titled "Dimmu Borgir" marches with the pomp of a coronation. Snowy Shaw adds clean vocals on several tracks, giving the bombast an unexpected melodic edge.
It is symphonic black metal at full cinematic scale, as theatrical as it is ferocious.
Spread across two discs, this pressing gives the orchestra and the guitars all the space they need, and with that splatter and gatefold it looks every bit the part on the shelf.
