Digital Underground's The Body-Hat Syndrome turns 30 with this anniversary pressing on two yellow LPs, bringing back the Oakland crew's gloriously strange 1993 P-Funk party.
Their third full-length album arrived on Tommy Boy with production from the D-Flow Production Squad, and new voices joined the line-up as rappers Saafir and Clee came aboard. Shock G and his nose-glasses alter ego Humpty Hump stayed the ringmasters, steering a loose running gag built around the body-hat, the group's cheeky name for a condom.
The Return of the Crazy One opens with a wink and a sample of Parliament's Aqua Boogie, setting the tone for a record soaked in George Clinton's influence. Wussup Wit the Luv is the album's conscience, an anti-racism plea featuring a verse from 2Pac and a guitar solo from Funkadelic's Michael Hampton. Then there is The Humpty Dance Awards, a hilarious roll call of the many artists who had already sampled The Humpty Dance.
Doo Woo You keeps the bounce coming, and the Body-Hats skits stitch it all together like a late-night variety show hosted by a man in a fake nose.
It is funny, funky and smarter than it lets on, and the anniversary yellow vinyl suits its technicolour sense of humour perfectly.
