Our Man In Paris catches Dexter Gordon in 1963, newly settled in Europe and leading a quartet stacked with bebop royalty.
Gordon had moved across the Atlantic the year before, joining a community of American jazz musicians who found more respect and steadier work in European cities than back home. For this Paris session he was reunited with old friends from the bebop days: pianist Bud Powell and drummer Kenny Clarke, both fellow expatriates, alongside the superb French bassist Pierre Michelot.
"Scrapple from the Apple" opens with Gordon at his most relaxed and commanding, his huge tone riding just behind the beat. "Willow Weep for Me" stretches into a slow, smoky blues full of sly humour and quoted melodies, while "Stairway to the Stars" shows the tender, romantic side of his playing. The album closes with an exuberant "A Night in Tunisia", Clarke's drums driving the band into a thrilling finish.
Powell, whose health had been fragile for years, sounds focused and inventive here, and his chemistry with Gordon gives the session a warm, celebratory glow.
The record remains one of the best-loved entries in Gordon's catalogue, a perfect introduction to his big-hearted sound and a reminder of how brightly bebop burned in Paris during those years.
