Dexter Gordon was living and thriving in Europe when he cut One Flight Up in Paris in 1964, and the session catches him stretched out and in towering form.
Gordon had left the United States for Europe a couple of years earlier, finding steady work and a devoted audience on the continent. Blue Note's Francis Wolff produced this date at CBS Studios in Paris, and the label released it in 1965. Around Gordon's big, burnished tenor sit trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Kenny Drew, the teenage Danish bass prodigy Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and drummer Art Taylor, a band that mixes hard bop fire with an unhurried ease.
The centerpiece is Byrd's "Tanya", an 18-minute epic that fills the entire first side, rolling along on an unhurried groove that gives both horn players acres of room to build long, searching solos. Side two opens with Drew's "Coppin' the Haven" before Gordon slows to a tender crawl on the standard "Darn That Dream", where his tone is at its most luxurious. Byrd sits out the ballad, leaving the spotlight to Gordon.
Three tracks across two sides is the kind of long-form playing that rewards a deep listen.
It is a superb portrait of a giant far from home, sounding completely comfortable in his own skin.
