Devo's Freedom of Choice is the 1980 album that turned the Ohio art-punk eccentrics into unlikely pop stars, pressed here on white vinyl.
Their third album streamlined the jerky, nervous energy of their first two records into tight, synth-driven new wave with hooks to spare. Producer Robert Margouleff helped sharpen the sound, and the band's red energy dome hats soon became one of the most recognizable images of the era. Underneath the matching outfits was a group of Akron misfits with a deeply skeptical view of consumer culture, and this is where that worldview finally found a mass audience.
"Whip It" is the obvious headline, a deadpan parody of can-do motivational slogans that became an unlikely hit. "Girl U Want" rides a spiky, insistent riff, while "Gates of Steel" builds into one of the band's most anthemic moments. The title track "Freedom of Choice" lays out their philosophy in miniature, a wry jab at the illusion of choice in modern life.
Beneath the costumes and robotic movement was a genuinely subversive band, and Freedom of Choice is where their message and their melodies lined up perfectly.
On white vinyl, it remains one of the sharpest and most fun records new wave ever produced, and it still sounds like it was beamed in from a slightly better-organized future.
