Sorry, Mom is where Destroy Boys first let it rip, the Sacramento punk band's 2016 debut, scrappy and furious and funny in all the right places.
Alexia Roditis and Violet Mayugba started the band as an acoustic project in 2015, but it didn't stay quiet for long. Released the following year, this record built them a fiercely loyal local following and set up everything that came after, from relentless touring to the bigger, louder records that followed. Epitaph has since brought it back into print, and it sounds as raw and restless as ever.
"Duck Eat Duck World" comes out swinging, all jagged guitar and attitude, while "I Threw Glass at My Friend's Eyes and Now I'm on Probation" might be the best song title in modern punk, matched by a racket to fit. "Word Salad" closes the album by stretching out past six minutes, rewarding anyone patient enough to let it play to the very end.
Roditis's voice swings from deadpan to full-throated howl in a heartbeat, and the songs channel their frustrations with a sharp sense of humour rather than self-pity.
Nine tracks, under half an hour, and nothing wasted. For anyone who found the band through their later records, this is the loud, honest first chapter, and it still holds up brilliantly.
