Dermot Kennedy strips things back on I've Told the Trees Everything, a four-track EP from 2024 that returns to the hushed intensity of his earliest songs. This is a UK import pressing.
Released through Island between his second album Sonder and his third, The Weight of the Woods, the EP gave the Dublin singer room to step away from arena-sized production. The title nods to a group of trees he has described as watching over him through good times and bad, and the cover and inserts pair artwork by Nicholas Moegly with Kennedy's own handwriting, so the whole package feels like a page torn from a notebook. Producers on the project included Kenny Beats and Rodaidh McDonald.
Sunday is a slow, aching reflection that lets that famously husky voice carry the emotion. Two Hearts keeps the arrangement spare and the focus squarely on the melody, while Lucky leans on his knack for bittersweet, hymn-like choruses. Lessons, brand new when the EP arrived, adds a quieter, contemplative note.
It is a short listen, but nothing here feels like filler, and the quiet production makes every word land.
For fans who first fell for Kennedy's raw, stripped-down early material, this EP feels like a homecoming worth savouring on vinyl.
