Heavier and more human than anything before it, Songs of Faith and Devotion saw Depeche Mode tear up their own rulebook in 1993.

Following the global success of Violator, the band could easily have played it safe. Instead, working with producer Flood, they leaned into gospel, blues and grinding guitars, with Dave Gahan's raw, soul-searching vocals at the centre. It was also the last album to feature Alan Wilder, whose arrangements and live drumming are a huge part of its texture.

I Feel You opens with a screeching, bluesy guitar riff that announced the band's new direction in no uncertain terms, and Walking in My Shoes turns guilt and empathy into a brooding, hypnotic plea. Condemnation is a gospel-tinged confession carried by one of Gahan's most emotional performances, while In Your Room builds slowly into a towering, obsessive climax.

The sound is grittier than earlier Depeche Mode, trading some synth-pop sheen for organic weight, choirs and churning rhythm. Martin Gore's songwriting keeps its familiar pull between darkness and longing, but here it feels bigger and more desperate.

For fans of the band's most intense era, this vinyl brings the album's thunder home, and it remains one of the boldest turns in their entire catalogue.
