Visions of Dennis Brown is the 1978 roots reggae landmark that helped make Dennis Brown one of Jamaica's most revered voices, and it still sounds full of conviction.
The album was the first fruit of Brown's second stint with producer Joe Gibbs, a partnership that carried him to international success and made the pair a dominant force in late seventies reggae. Engineer Errol Thompson shaped the sound, and the band is stacked with heavyweights, including Sly Dunbar on drums, Lloyd Parks on bass and a horn section featuring Tommy McCook, Bobby Ellis and Vin Gordon.
Deliverance Will Come sets a spiritual, hopeful tone, and Malcolm X pays tribute to the civil rights leader over a heavy, rolling groove. Love Me Always shows Brown's lovers rock side, all warmth and silky phrasing, while Repatriation speaks to the longing for Africa at the heart of so much roots music. Jah Can Do It keeps the faith front and centre.
Economic hardship, faith and politics run through the lyrics, delivered with a tenderness that softens even the toughest lines, by a singer barely into his twenties.
Conscious, soulful and beautifully played, it is a cornerstone of any reggae collection and a reminder of why Brown, the Crown Prince of Reggae, is still treasured.
