Delicate Steve Sings is a sly title. On this 2024 album, Steve Marion's guitar does the singing, and it has rarely sounded more like a human voice.
The New Jersey multi-instrumentalist has spent more than a decade making wordless records that are instantly recognisable, while lending his playing to artists as varied as Paul Simon, The Black Keys and Miley Cyrus. Here he sets himself a classic singer's challenge: take songs everyone thinks they know and make them his own, the way the great interpreters do with standards.
So there are covers, played with real tenderness. The Beatles' "Yesterday" becomes a slow, sighing melody line, and Otis Redding's "These Arms of Mine" keeps every ounce of its ache without a single word being sung. Alongside them sit originals that sound like long-lost classics, among them "I'll Be There," which glides along like a forgotten Bill Withers groove.
Jonathan Rado plays bass, Kosta Galanopoulos handles drums and Renata Zeiguer adds strings, with Elliot Bergman on board as co-writer. The feel is warm and unhurried, every phrase bent and shaped the way a vocalist would sing it, set inside soft-focus arrangements.
It's an easy record to fall for, and a clever reminder that a guitar can carry a lyric even when nobody sings it.
