Deicide's Scars of the Crucifix is a 2004 blast of Florida death metal, lean and furious and over almost before you have caught your breath.
Glen Benton's band spent the early 1990s helping to define the Tampa sound, and by the new millennium plenty of listeners wondered whether their best days were behind them. This album, their first for Earache, answered with a tight, focused set built on speed and venom. It was also the final Deicide record to feature guitarists Eric and Brian Hoffman, whose twin attack had shaped the band from the beginning.
The title track storms out with a riff that sounds like heavy machinery tearing itself apart, and "Mad at God" keeps the pressure on with Benton's trademark blend of guttural roar and higher, layered shriek. "Conquered by Sodom" and "When Heaven Burns" keep the pace punishing, the guitars trading razor-edged leads over Steve Asheim's relentless drumming.
Nine songs, no filler and an attitude that never apologises. It is a record that rewards being played loud, ideally while the neighbours are out.
For death metal collectors, this is a vital piece of the Deicide story and a showcase of how ferocious the classic lineup could sound when it had a point to prove.
