Deer Tick have spent two decades as one of Providence's scrappiest, most soulful rock bands, and Coin-O-Matic finally turns the spotlight on their hometown. It arrives here on green vinyl.
Released in 2026, it is the first album the band produced entirely on their own, made in their home studio in Providence. The title comes from a cigarette vending machine company that once served as a front for mob boss Raymond Patriarca, and the songs follow that thread into the hidden histories of working-class Rhode Island, the kind of stories traded across a bar rather than printed in textbooks.
John McCauley's gravelly voice remains the band's secret weapon, able to land a punchline and a heartbreak in the same breath. Lead single "Mary Singletary" and the follow-up "Everything Born" carry the record's local-history spirit, while opener "Dog Years" and closer "Candy Cigarettes" bookend the set with the loose, lived-in interplay of four players who know each other's instincts cold.
Producing themselves suits them. Nothing here sounds polished for the sake of it, and the rough edges feel deliberate, part of the story rather than a flaw in it.
For longtime fans, it is Deer Tick at their most rooted, and a fine place to start for anyone just discovering them.
