New singer, new bassist, same thunder: Deep Purple's Burn arrives on fittingly purple vinyl, the 1974 album that proved the band could reinvent itself without losing any firepower.
With Ian Gillan and Roger Glover gone, the Mark III line-up brought in a little-known singer named David Coverdale and bassist-vocalist Glenn Hughes from Trapeze, alongside Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord and Ian Paice. They recorded in Montreux using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio, the same setup behind Machine Head, and worked quickly, laying down roughly a song a day.
The title track "Burn" kicks the door in with one of Blackmore's most ferocious riffs and a breakneck duel between guitar and Lord's organ. "Mistreated" slows to a smoldering blues that gives Coverdale room to wail, while "Might Just Take Your Life" and "Sail Away" add a funky, soulful swagger shaped by his twin-vocal partnership with Hughes. Ian Paice's drumming on the title track is a masterclass in controlled chaos.
Hard rock and blues collide here with a fresh dash of funk, and the result stands among the band's finest hours. It belongs in any classic rock collection, and makes a striking addition on the shelf in this color, especially when the title track comes roaring out of the speakers at full volume.
