Few bands sound as gleefully unhinged as Death Grips, and Year of the Snitch finds the Sacramento trio at their most chaotic, smashing hip hop and electronic noise together.
Released in 2018 through the band's own Third Worlds imprint with Harvest, their sixth studio album brought in an unusual cast of collaborators, including Tool bassist Justin Chancellor, experimental musician Lucas Abela and Shrek director Andrew Adamson. Turntablist DJ Swamp appears across much of the record, adding scratches and cut-up textures to the mayhem. Given the band's long history of surprise drops and baffling stunts, that eclectic guest list felt entirely on brand, and the results are just as strange as you would hope.
MC Ride's barked, unpredictable delivery drives it all, with Zach Hill and Andy Morin building beats that swerve without warning. "Death Grips Is Online" opens with a blast of glitchy menace, "Black Paint" rides a grimy, almost rock-leaning riff, "Streaky" bounces with deranged energy, and "Hahaha" leans into the record's warped sense of humor.
Abrasive and impossible to predict, it rewards anyone who likes their music with sharp edges, and the dense production hits differently through a good pair of speakers. Expect the unexpected, then turn it up anyway. It is the band at their most playful, which is saying something.
