Pour something warm and dim the lights: Dino's Christmas gathers ten holiday favourites from Dean Martin's golden Capitol years.
Compiled in 2013, the collection draws largely on A Winter Romance, the 1959 album Martin recorded in Hollywood with arranger and conductor Gus Levene, plus a few seasonal sides from the same decade. These were the years when his easygoing baritone and twinkling sense of humour made him the coolest man in any room, and he sings these songs as if he's leaning on a piano at a party that's just getting good. Martin would later record a different Christmas album for Reprise in the sixties, but these earlier performances carry a particular late-fifties glow.
Baby, It's Cold Outside is pure flirtatious charm, and Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! swings with the effortless ease that defined his style. White Christmas gets a relaxed, crooning treatment, while The Christmas Blues reveals a wistful, bluesier side that's easy to miss among all the cheer. Lush strings and gentle brass wrap around every line like a well-knitted scarf.
It's the sound of tree trimming, eggnog and late-night snowfall, delivered with a raised eyebrow and a smile. December just feels a little smoother, and a lot more stylish, with Dino on the turntable.
