Dead Calm's Accept is a slow-burning indie rock record built on hush and heartache, pressed here on clear vinyl with black splatter.
Dead Calm is one of several aliases used by Liam McCay, a young and prolific Irish musician from County Donegal whose songs lean toward slowcore. He started out on fiddle before switching to guitar, and he has built a large catalogue on his own terms, keeping the process personal. First released in 2024, Accept gathers twelve songs of introspection and melancholy.
"Bleed" opens the album with quiet tension, setting a mood that rarely lifts above a murmur. Songs like "Jemma" feel intimate and close to the bone, and the closing "Sweat and Tears," featuring Casper Hill, leaves on a gentle ache that lingers well after the needle lifts.
Several guests drop in along the way, including widowdusk and wratt starr, who features on "Understand," yet the record holds a consistent atmosphere throughout: slow tempos, soft vocals and guitars that seem to hang in the air. It's the sound of someone working through heavy feelings without raising his voice.
This is music for late nights and headphones, the kind of album that feels like a private conversation. On clear vinyl streaked with black, the pressing suits the moody, washed-out spirit of the songs.
