Dayseeker's Sleeptalk is the record where the California post-hardcore band traded some of their bludgeon for atmosphere, and it returns on a limited edition violet pressing.

Released in 2019 on Spinefarm, their fourth album found vocalist Rory Rodriguez leaning hard into the moody, synth-washed side of the genre, a direction that would carry the band into Dark Sun a few years later. Producer Daniel Braunstein framed the songs with space and shimmer, letting the heavy moments land harder because they are not crammed into every bar. At a lean ten tracks, nothing outstays its welcome.

Opener "Drunk" sets the tone with a hook that aches more than it rages, "Crooked Soul" pairs crunching guitars with a chorus built for the back row, and "Burial Plot" is all dread and longing wrapped in a slow, heavy sway. The title track sits near the heart of the record, dreamy and unsettled, as if the whole thing really were recorded somewhere between sleeping and waking. Rodriguez's clean, soaring vocals carry much of the weight, gliding over programmed textures and drums that hit like slammed doors.

For anyone who came to the band through their later records, this is where that sound clicked into focus. The violet vinyl suits its bruised, after-midnight mood.
