David Gray's White Ladder is the word-of-mouth phenomenon that turned a struggling singer-songwriter into a household name, spread here across two LPs.

By 1998 Gray had three albums behind him and no major label in his corner, so he made his fourth on a shoestring with a tiny crew and released it on his own label. What happened next became folklore. Irish listeners embraced it first, the songs travelled from friend to friend, and White Ladder kept climbing long after anyone expected it to stop, eventually finding an audience across the UK and America.

The sound is the secret. Acoustic guitar and piano sit on humble drum loops and electronic textures, a folk singer's heart wired into a late-night home studio. Babylon rides its loop with an easy grin, Please Forgive Me builds into a slow, aching surge, and This Year's Love strips everything back to Gray's raw, catch-in-the-throat voice and a few piano chords. The closing cover of Soft Cell's Say Hello, Wave Goodbye stretches out into a tender, unhurried farewell.

More than two decades on, it still sounds like the record that played in every kitchen at the turn of the millennium, and giving it room on a double LP lets those quiet details breathe.
