Long before Ziggy Stardust, a teenage Davie Jones was cutting mod singles in London, and The Shel Talmy Recordings collects those 1965 sessions on a limited 180-gram LP.

Talmy was the producer behind early records by The Who and The Kinks, and that year he worked with the young singer across two bands, The Manish Boys and Davie Jones & The Lower Third. A couple of Parlophone singles came out of it, to little fanfare, and the rest stayed on the shelf. These recordings sit well before his 1967 debut album, when he was still searching for a voice of his own and had not yet settled on the name Bowie.

The LP opens with "You've Got a Habit of Leaving", a restless R&B single that Bowie returned to decades later for the Toy project, and also features The Manish Boys' take on "I Pity the Fool". Six of the twelve tracks were previously unheard, among them "I Want Your Love" and "Cupid", which waited in the archive for six decades.

Session players such as Jimmy Page and Nicky Hopkins passed through these dates, giving the mod-era sound real bite.

For anyone tracing Bowie's story back to its first chapter, this is a fascinating portrait of an ambitious kid on the verge of reinventing himself.
