David Bowie ended a decade of silence with The Next Day in 2013, and this remastered 180-gram double LP gives his comeback all the room it needs.

The album was made in near-total secrecy in New York with longtime producer Tony Visconti, and the world only found out when "Where Are We Now?" appeared without warning on Bowie's 66th birthday. Even the sleeve played games, recycling the Heroes cover with a blank white square stamped across his face. It was a statement about memory and refusing to become a museum piece, made by an artist with every reason to rest.

Musically it hits far harder than that fragile lead single suggests. The title track kicks the door in with clattering drums and a snarl, "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)" needles celebrity culture over glamorous, wiry guitar, and "Love Is Lost" stalks along on cold organ and creeping dread. Elsewhere the band leans into angular art rock, squalling saxophone and the kind of crooked melodies only Bowie could make sound inevitable.

Spread across four sides of heavyweight vinyl, the songs have space to breathe, and the remastered sound suits Visconti's dense, punchy arrangements.

Anyone who knows Blackstar should hear the chapter that came first: the sound of a legend deciding, after years away, that he still had plenty left to say.
