Shadowed and searching, Heathen found David Bowie reunited with producer Tony Visconti in 2002, and this remastered vinyl edition brings its brooding beauty back into focus.

It was the pair's first full album together since Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) in 1980, and the reunion clearly suited them both. Much of it was recorded at Allaire Studios in Shokan, in upstate New York, between 2001 and early 2002, and it was released on Bowie's own ISO label. The songs circle mortality, faith and doubt, themes that land even harder in hindsight.

Opener "Sunday" rises from a hush into something vast and hymnal, while "Slow Burn" features Pete Townshend on guitar. Bowie also reshapes three covers, including Pixies' "Cactus" and Neil Young's "I've Been Waiting for You", the latter with Dave Grohl guesting.

Visconti layers strings, synths and guitars into wide, cinematic spaces, and Bowie's voice sits at the centre, rich and assured, sounding more emotionally direct than it had in years. Many fans regard it as the start of a remarkable late-career renaissance that carried through to his final records.

Newly remastered, it is a fine reminder that some of Bowie's most quietly powerful work arrived long after the Ziggy years, when he no longer had anything to prove.
