Dave Matthews Band broke out of Charlottesville and onto radios everywhere with Under the Table and Dreaming, their 1994 major-label debut, pressed here on two 150-gram LPs.

By the time RCA came calling, the band had built a fervent following in Virginia's bars and college towns, powered by an unusual line-up: Dave Matthews on acoustic guitar and vocals, Boyd Tinsley on violin, LeRoi Moore on saxophones, Stefan Lessard on bass and Carter Beauford on drums. Producer Steve Lillywhite, known for his work with U2, helped them translate their loose, jazzy live energy into tight, radio-ready songs without sanding off the quirks.

What Would You Say became the breakthrough, its jittery groove lifted by a harmonica cameo from John Popper of Blues Traveler. Ants Marching remains a fan anthem, a wry look at the routines of everyday life set to a sprinting violin line, while Satellite and Jimi Thing show off the band's gentler and jammier sides.

Few debuts have kept their warmth so well. With Beauford's elastic drumming and Moore's sax weaving through every arrangement, the album still sounds like a summer evening on a crowded lawn. This double vinyl set gives the songs room to stretch out, just as they do on stage.
