Dave Matthews Band's Crash spreads out across two 180-gram LPs in a gatefold anniversary edition, giving the 1996 breakthrough the room its long, winding grooves have always deserved.

Their second major-label album found the Charlottesville band at full stride, climbing to number two on the Billboard 200 and turning their genre-blurring sound into a mainstream fixture. Steve Lillywhite returned as producer, recording the group at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, New York, and capturing the easy interplay of a band that had built its reputation night after night on the road, long before radio caught on.

"Crash Into Me" is the slow-dance classic, all hushed longing and gentle guitar, while "Too Much" struts on a funky riff and Carter Beauford's restless drumming. "So Much to Say" bursts with energy, and "Two Step" stretches out into the kind of extended jam that made their concerts legendary. LeRoi Moore's saxophone and Boyd Tinsley's violin weave through it all, adding warmth and a touch of jazz to the band's earthy, acoustic-driven rock.

Decades on, Crash still sounds like a summer evening on the lawn with friends, sticky and joyous. Spread across four sides of heavyweight vinyl, the album finally gets to breathe the way it always did on stage.
