Dave Matthews Band reached their darkest and most ambitious peak on Before These Crowded Streets, pressed here as a double LP in a gatefold jacket.

In 1998, the band's third studio album knocked the Titanic soundtrack off the top of the Billboard 200, ending its sixteen-week run at number one. Commercial clout aside, it is a moodier, knottier record than the sunny singles that made their name, with producer Steve Lillywhite helping the group stretch songs into long, intricate arrangements that unfold like suites.

The guest list adds remarkable colour throughout. Alanis Morissette lends her voice to "Don't Drink the Water," a brooding meditation on displacement and greed, and returns on the closing "Spoon," which also features Béla Fleck's banjo. The Kronos Quartet bring frantic strings to "Halloween," while Tim Reynolds threads guitar through every track. "Crush" is the album's romantic heart, an eight-minute slow burn of jazz-tinged longing.

Nothing here is rushed, and every track invites you to lean in a little closer and listen for the details.

Spread across two discs with room to breathe, this is the right format for a record that thrives on patience and the slow build, and it remains a fan favourite for very good reason, even decades on.
