Danny Brown has never been one to play it safe, and Stardust may be his most gloriously unhinged reinvention yet, pressed here on white vinyl across a gatefold double LP.
Released in 2025 on Warp, it is the Detroit rapper's first album made entirely sober, written after a stint in rehab and fueled by a newfound love of hyperpop. Brown builds the record around Dusty Star, a fictional 1990s pop idol who works as both self-parody and self-portrait, with spoken interludes framed as fan mail stitching the story together.
The guest list reads like a roll call of the internet underground. Quadeca sets things in motion on "Book of Daniel," Underscores joins for the frenetic "Copycats," and Frost Children help steer "Green Light" toward the dancefloor, while lead single "Starburst" shows Brown sounding more energized than he has in years. Producers including Jane Remover, Nnamdï and Umru push the sound through EDM, digicore, drum and bass and hip house.
Through all the glitter, his unmistakable yelp still cuts through, wrestling with purpose, regret, gratitude and plenty of braggadocio.
It is a bold, funny and surprisingly tender record from an artist who keeps finding new ways to surprise, and the white vinyl suits its bright, starry concept.
