Daniel Pemberton's score for Project Hail Mary captures the loneliness and wonder of deep space, and it lands here as a clear double LP.
The 2026 film, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and adapted from Andy Weir's novel, stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes alone on a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there. Pemberton, whose playful, genre-bending work on the Spider-Verse films made him one of the most distinctive composers in Hollywood, had an enormous canvas to fill, and he fills it with real heart.
The music moves between tense electronics and sweeping orchestral swells as Grace pieces together his mission. "Ryland Grace, Cognition Assessment" opens in a disoriented fog, mirroring a mind rebooting, while "Rocky Moves In" brings warmth and humor once Grace's unlikely alien companion arrives. "Learning to Communicate" follows the story's most charming thread, and "Amaze Amaze Amaze (Life on Erid)" carries the friendship at the center of it all to a joyful, emotional peak.
Like the best science fiction scores, it works as a story without pictures, tracing a path from isolation to connection.
Pressed on clear vinyl across two discs, it makes a fine companion for anyone who fell for the film, the book, or a certain five-legged engineer.
