Dance Gavin Dance reopen the Tree City Sessions series for a third round, and this colored double vinyl doubles down with a full set of bonus instrumentals.

The Sacramento band started the series in 2016 as a way of recutting favourites from across their catalogue in a live, stripped-for-action setting, following it with a second volume in 2020. Tree City Sessions 3 arrives in 2026 with a clear purpose: these are fresh versions of older songs, all now fronted by clean vocalist Andrew Wells, who stepped into the role full time in 2024. Jon Mess is still there to supply the snarling counterpoint, with Will Swan's guitar lines and Matthew Mingus's drums keeping the knots tight.

The setlist digs deep into the catalogue. "It's Safe to Say You Dig the Backseat", "Burning Down the Nicotine Armoire", "Need Money" and "Bloodsucker" all get fresh treatments, giving Wells the chance to put his own stamp on fan favourites. Disc two then hands over the instrumental versions of all twelve songs, which lays bare just how intricate those math-rock guitar patterns really are.

For longtime fans it makes a fascinating side-by-side with the originals, and for guitar obsessives the instrumental disc is a masterclass in controlled chaos.
